Born to a Polish father and English mother, Jan grew up in the industrial city of Bradford in the north of England, surrounded by the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. Her home and school environs inspired her and nurtured her natural creative flair and artistic ability. Unfortunately, as history tells us, an artist’s path is not necessarily a lucrative one. So in order to fund her passion for art and design, Jan completed her degree and entered the corporate world. Loving fashion and design, she spent several years either running her own fashion business or working as a buyer for a major departmental store in London. Sourcing materials worldwide afforded her, through this work, to form another passion…travel; to this day a source of joy and inspiration. We find her today, the proud owner of Atelier Sottomuro, in the beautiful city of Rovinj, overlooking the Adriatic. Immediately captivated by the wonderfully artistic ambiance of this ancient city, Jan fulfilled her life ambition of devoting herself to creating abstract works of art and quirkily unique pieces of jewellery in her own studio overlooking the sea.
Over the years Jan’s work has attracted a considerable following and has been widely exhibited. She is a member of Ulix, an artist’s group in Pula, Croatia and in 2008 won first prize in the prestigious Mandrac art competition with her abstract interpretation of the ancient Glagolithic alphabet that originates from the area where she now lives.
